Offered here is a monumental original artwork by John Pearson. It can be displayed horizontally or vertically. Currently unframed. The fine color lines have been screen printed onto linen. Signed verso, and marked “Mondrian Linear Series : Vert : W #2.” It has a card on the back from The New Gallery of Contemporary Art in Cleveland specifying the date 1976. We acquired this work directly from the only person to own it since 1976.

John Pearson (British) has developed his style over the past five decades from an intense system-based program to one more attuned to the spiritual influences of the natural environment. With over 100 one-man shows (his first in London in 1963) and numerous accolades and prizes, he continues to perfect his carefully painted and constructed pieces to suggest the beauty of form. He was a Professor of Art at Oberlin College until recently. His work is in the permanent collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Art.

Pearson’s early style reflects the European reaction to expressionism and artistic emotionalism in the form of a rational, systematic approach to art. He investigated color within a pre-determined linear or grid system that eliminated options after the artist’s initial choices. Pearson’s early works were based on the straight line. Soon he began exploring the possibilities of geometrical shapes and restricted color schemes in his 1970s Mondrian Series. In effect, the mathematical system itself became the subject of the painting.
